Outreach event to focus on illegal dumping

The community is invited to join officials at Throw Away Responsib-LEE, a special all-ages event to illustrate the Lehigh Acres community’s resolve to address illegal dumping and have some fun from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 3rd, at Veterans Park, 55 Homestead Road South.

During the event, Lehigh Acres residents will be able to safely and responsibly dispose of household chemical waste at no charge, such as:

  • Leftover paints
  • Cleaners
  • Herbicides
  • Pesticides
  • Automotive fluids
  • Pool chemicals
  • Bulk items (such as furniture)

Illegal dumping has been an ongoing and consistent issue in Lehigh Acres. Fueled by empty lots, rapid growth and ongoing construction, the problem has led to unsightly messes and poor morale across the community.

However, it is an issue that the community can address together.

Guest speakers will start off the event at 9 a.m. including Lee County Commissioners, and representatives from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Keep Lee County Beautiful, Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District, Lee County Mosquito Control District and more.

Children will be able to see a Lehigh Acres fire truck and a clean Waste Pro truck up close. They also can enjoy treats from the Sheriff’s Office ice cream truck.

Community partners will be present to meet with everyone in attendance, including Lee County Solid Waste and other county departments, the Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District, Keep Lee County Beautiful Inc., Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District, and the Lee County Mosquito Control District.

“I encourage everyone in the community to join me on August 3rd and take full advantage of this event,” said Lee County Commissioner Mike Greenwell, who chairs the Lee Board of County Commissioners and whose district includes Lehigh Acres. “The event will help educate the public on the existing resources, ways to report illegal dumping, and ways Lee County is addressing the issue. With the community working together toward a common goal, we can help stop the dumping and take pride in our community.”

Please note that the waste collection is for household hazardous waste only. Businesses that need chemical waste disposal can call MXI Environmental Services at 276-477-0947 to schedule an appointment for the monthly business collection held at the county’s permanent Household Chemical Waste drop-off location, 6441 Topaz Court, off Metro Parkway in south Fort Myers.
